New description:

 *Plotting an array of IXTdataset_1d objects will adjust the axes limits to
 suit the first in the array only.

 *overplot uses the standard plot with a "hold on" to plot data. This is
 problematic for a few reasons:

 ** We may, for whatever reason, reset the state of the plot during
 dl/de/dm etc. which could interfere with this.

 ** The first problem above can't be fixed as simply as it would be if it
 weren't for this

 ** Code is dispersed in two functions that should be in a single function.
