 (In [1299]) this is a very big change, implementing IXTaxis and removing
 IXTunits. affects fortran and matlab scripting/plotting.

 the IXFunits functions are still called, but they take IXTaxis objects as
 input instead of IXTunits. this change has also impacted
 on the creation of labels in the GTK plotting.
 standard units MUST now be prefixed with a '$', to allow user defined
 units to have priority in matlab creation
