 The final output of Homer for MAPS and MERLIN data might correspond to
 only ~50,000 x 200 =10^7 pixels and therefore comfortably fit in the
 memory. However, because there are ~2500 time channels, the intermediate
 calculations in reading, units conversion and rebinning will occupy an
 order of magnitude more memory. This is a problem on machines with 1GB
 memory. The solution is break up the manipulations into chunks; this may
 have repercussions throughout the code.
