 list of allowed characters is provided in ixf_remove_spaces, if a non-
 allowed is used then it's replaced with _, or if decimal point "p".
 However, this is not satisfactory - any unallowed character at the start
 of a name will give an error, also this means that the name "this name"
 will interfere with the name "this_name" and when naming plots with lots
 of odd symbols this may well provide a problem, i.e. "iron data 200 - sim"
 is the same as "iron data 200 + sim"
