 DW - matlab is ready to handle a cell format for strings (I think!)

 Action: Dickon: 24/11/06 TGP and JDMC discussed using allocatable length
 character strings, as are already used in data source object, IXThistory.
 A nasty quick fix is to use carriage return or line-feed in the current
 string to indicate new lines, but this is far from ideal. Whatever is done
 has implications for conversion to and from Matlab,
